SiC vs MoSi₂ Heating Elements: Which Type Fits Your Furnace?

Why This Specification Matters

SiC and MoSi₂ heating elements are both used in high-temperature electric furnaces, but they are not interchangeable simply because both are ceramic resistance heating elements. The selection should follow the furnace design, operating conditions and electrical requirements.

What Buyers Should Confirm

SiC heating elements are silicon carbide heating rods used in industrial furnaces, ceramic kilns, sintering equipment, glass processing and heat-treatment systems. They are commonly selected for high-temperature industrial heating applications where a rigid ceramic heating element is required.

Technical Information for a Correct Quotation

MoSi₂ heating elements are molybdenum disilicide heating elements. They are also used in high-temperature furnaces, laboratory furnaces, ceramic sintering and advanced materials processing. A typical configuration in the existing product information is RS18 3/6 with Le 160, Lu 180 and A 25.

Practical Ordering Checklist

The decision should not be made only by comparing advertised maximum temperatures. The more important question is whether the element configuration, resistance, voltage, power and furnace atmosphere fit the actual equipment.

For a replacement project, identify what the furnace originally used. If the furnace was designed around SiC elements, changing to MoSi₂ is not simply a matter of installing a different rod. The electrical design, mounting arrangement and control system need to be considered.

Likewise, when a new furnace is being designed, the heating-element choice should be discussed together with the furnace temperature, chamber dimensions, required power, electrical supply and process atmosphere.

The best purchasing practice is therefore to send the supplier the furnace information and the existing element specification rather than asking only for a price per piece.

For a quick quotation, provide the element type, dimensions, resistance, voltage, quantity and operating temperature. If you are unsure whether SiC or MoSi₂ is appropriate, send the furnace application and current element information and ask for a technical review.
